Keep Your Attitude Up

Finally, I’m sitting here with some time to think. Over the last month or so, I have felt that I have so much to do and that I am getting very little traction in completing all those things. As I have a moment to reflect, I can see that I have been doing lots of things, but I am failing to complete them.

That isn’t to say that they are not finished, they are just not complete. I have forgotten to celebrate progress.

I often say to clients, “when you finish a task, say out loud “Done”. It is amazing how that impacts our ability to complete and move forward. When you have finished a task, unless you close the book on that activity, you will keep going back to it. It is therefore zapping your time and energy for other tasks.

I thought you might be interested in things I do to keep my attitude up when the business of life and the many things we have on our plate get me down. In this series, I will look at a few of those things. Enjoy the read, and more so, the application.

Take some time away.

You know what happens. You have planned to achieve several things throughout the day, everything seems to be going well, when out of nowhere, disaster strikes.

All of your best laid plans begin to tumble. Unfortunately, this often compounds the problem. By reacting, we tend to operate out of our weaknesses instead of our strengths. We make decisions that are not well thought out.

We function with an attitude that says, “I can’t believe this is happening!”

Learn to Step Back. I used to have a close colleague I could call. The simple question was “Coffee” and we knew that the other person needed to get away from the current and step back. We might go for coffee or just a walk. The basis was it allowed me to destress and debrief. To clear my mind to be able to come back fresh and address the issue rationally. It gave me the opportunity to choose my attitude as I faced the circumstances at hand.

Remember that you don’t have to do something right now. Go grab a cup of coffee and relax.

Keep your eye on the goal.

One of the biggest problems with trouble (and things from left field) is that they take your focus away from where it should be. I talk to my clients about that old saying “Working on your business not in your business” in my Observations series. The concept holds for big and small picture things. You can get distracted by the immediate and loose focus of the bigger goals.

Before starting out on any adventure, journey, you should sit down and plan your course. If things are going wrong, go back to the basics. Go to your training and your navigation plan. It has the effect of focusing you back onto the big picture so you can walk through the current issue.

If you find yourself getting down about circumstances, go back to your goal. If you didn’t prepare your goal before setting out, sit down NOW and write out what your goal is, and give some thought to how you can achieve it.

Make sure you’re keeping the important things important.

A man was asked how he was doing and he responded, “Pretty well, under the circumstances.” The other man asked, “What are you doing under the circumstances?” Good question. We shouldn’t be under the circumstances. We should be focused on the goal and moving forward.

Focus on solutions, not problems.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” the old saying goes. Negative circumstances don’t sit idly by—they scream for our attention.

One of the key foundations to any business is to address the cause, rather than the effect.

When we face difficult circumstances, we tend to dwell on them. We talk about them, fret about them and give them way too much attention.

Instead of focusing on the effect, we should address the cause of what is happening. Only about 1% of business owners do this. They think of new ways to do things.

Instead of spending your time thinking about how bad things are, think about how good they will be! Don’t have family or staff meetings about the problems and how big they are; have meetings on the solutions and how you will implement them.

Don’t let yourself or other team members complain; encourage them to solve, with an emphasis on the positive results that will come from doing so. Then take some time to put these solutions down on paper so you can monitor your progress.

Get some positive input.

The mind tends to build on itself, so when we begin to go in one direction (like worrying) it can be a slippery slope. One thing we must do is get our thoughts back on track.

I focus on transforming the way I am thinking.

Thomas Edison is attributed to having said:
“I have not failed 10,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 10,000 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.”

When circumstances have you against the emotional wall, meet with a friend who can encourage you. Whatever external influence you can get to put your attitude and perspective back on the positive side of the tracks—do it! Learn to transform the way you think. Renew your mind. It must be one of our first goals, to start plugging good things into our minds.

Tell yourself the good.

Following from my previous post, one of the greatest internal powers we have is the power to control our thoughts. Transform your thinking by renewing you mind.

There is a great quote: Finally, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Spend some time dwelling on the good things about your life or career instead of the problems. Think about positive things—things that you enjoy and that give you a sense of happiness and peace.

This makes all the difference!

Remember that circumstances are not forever.

Sometimes it can feel like we are going to be up to our eyeballs in the situation forever, when in reality, “this too shall pass.”

It feels like a constant up hill slog, and as you arrive at the top, there is another hill. There will be a time in the future when circumstances will change and you will be on the mountain instead of in the valley. This will give you a sense of hope as you live and work that will change your attitude, make you feel better and put you on the fast track for growth.

Go back to the big picture. Take your focus up from the immediate “what is going on around me” and climb the mast to the crow’s nest. It is from there that you can re-establish perspective.

Keep Your Attitude Up

– If I can overcome ANY problem then I have NO problem
– The bigger the problems I overcome, the bigger I become
– Don’t make problems smaller; make me bigger
– Everything is an opportunity to see what I am capable of
– Need to deliberately (and sometime gratuitously ) expand my comfort zone
– Every choice is a positive one – there are no wrong decisions just opportunities to learn and grow
– Growth mindset means we do not rely on our talents
– Everything can be improved and we are NEVER a finished product
– Ultimately – it’s cause and effect!

If the plan doesn’t work, change the plan not the goal.
I was inspired by todays image. It got me thinking thinking about strategies and about the number of small business that I am working with right now. Having a goal is critical to moving any business or activity forward. But a goal without a plan to achieve it is equally as useless. I meet so many business owners and would be business owners who have either not taken the time to write down their goal or if they have, the layer of dust on it is so thick that it would trigger an asthma attack if it were to be lifted off the shelf.
Having a goal is so critical in business (in life). I have mentioned these two incredibly wise and powerful statements before:
1. For want of a vision, the people will perish,
This speaks of the need for everyone (staff and customers) to know and understand the vision.
Many years ago I had the privilege of leading a team to develop a project proposal for a new ICT concept in Government. Where I worked were teams of people delivering various aspects of IT and each team was to contribute a person to the project. As people joined the team, I took the time to personally cast the vision of why we were doing what we were about to do. I then gave each member a week to prepare a presentation on what we were doing. As an exercise, I got some push back but in the end, every ember of the team totally understood the goal and vision and their part in the delivery. If problems arose (and they did) they were happy all get in and solve the issue together. Ownership of the final deliverable was high. Everyone knew what part they played in the end result. They had personal buy-in. If you don’t understand or believe in what you do and why you do it, neither will anyone else. The power of buy-in is incredible strong when it comes to growing your business.
2. Write down the goal so that others may be able to run with it.
Apple’s Why is to “Challenge the status quo” Uber’s is “Transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere for everyone.”
Of themselves these statements are interesting but useless. The fact that they are written down and that the team has gathered around the battle cry speaks of a leadership who have created a vision that is written down such that the people can run with it.
These two thoughts lead me back to the need to have the goal and a plan to achieve the goal. The goal is the fixed point in the future that you are aiming at. The focus of your why. You need to have the plan to move towards the goal and where the plan is not working, we can have the tendency to want to change the goal to fit the plan. I hope you have someone in your business who will challenge you to lift your head and see the forrest rather than the trees. The Goal (Why) is what drives your passion. Change the plan to realise success, not the goal to fall short of the vision.
Coaching is a way to stay true to your goal and adjust the plan to realise the goal rather than sacrificing the vision (why) at the alter of delivery of the plan.
